The speakers for this workshop are Amy Sommer, LICSW, and Danya Handelsman, LICSW, who work with substance-exposed newborns and their families as part of JF&CS Project NESST® (Newborns Exposed to Substances: Support and Therapy). The speakers are masters’-level clinicians with post-masters training in Infant-Parent Mental Health.
Topics they will cover in the workshop include:
- What to expect when parenting an infant who has been impacted by substance exposure, including unique developmental, sleep and feeding needs
- How adoptive parents can best support an infant who has been impacted by substance exposure, including calming and soothing strategies
- Specific strategies and supports for adoptive families
- Opportunities to seek individual consultation and support from NESST staff
