What is a Memory Café?

A memory café is a welcoming place for people with forgetfulness or other changes in their thinking and for their family and friends. Memory cafés meet at a variety of places including coffeehouses, museums, or community organizations.

Each memory café is different. Some cafés invite guest artists, some offer education about memory changes, and some are just for relaxing and chatting. But all cafés share one goal: to help guests feel comfortable and to know that they are not alone. Cafés are a place to talk with others who understand what you are going through, to forget about limitations and instead focus on strengths, to enjoy other’s company, and to explore something new.

The Immigrants' Assistance Center (IAC) created the Portuguese Elder Social Group in 2014, due to the social isolation, depression and memory loss of the elderly Portuguese community. The majority of the Portuguese elders are low-income, illiterate in their own language, and live in language isolated neighborhoods. A high percentage (98%) are female and widowed and experiencing social isolation and memory loss. The program supports clients in managing their physical and emotional health with preventative care and behavioral changes, and maintaining emotional wellness through a sense of communal belonging and participation. We have a holistic approach where elders who have been withdrawn and solitary engage with others, while coming to terms with and preparing to deal with end of life issues. All of the staff are multi-cultural. The benefits of the project include decreased memory loss, less social isolation, and enhanced intellectual and emotional well-being. The elders have created a Portuguese Poetry Book called "Living and Remembering" poems of our lives.
