What to Expect When You Call
Call us at 781-647-JFCS (5327), the main phone number for Jewish Family & Children’s Service. Ask the receptionist to connect you with Journey to Safety. The receptionist will not ask you for your name or any other identifying information.
If you are concerned about your privacy because you know someone who works at JF&CS, Journey to Safety has strict privacy policies and our advocates can meet you in the community at a mutually agreed upon location to avoid running into someone you might know.
Please note that this number is not a hotline. Our business hours are from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. We are closed on some federal and most Jewish holidays. If you need immediate assistance at a time when we are not available, you can call Safelink, the statewide 24/7 domestic abuse and sexual assault hotline, at 877-785-2020 or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233 or 800-787-3224 (TTY). You can also call the Shalom Task Force hotline at 888-883-2323, but note that the Shalom Task Force is also closed on Jewish holidays.
When your call is directed to our program, you will either get a live person or a voicemail message. You may leave a confidential detailed message on this line. We make every effort to return calls within one business day.
When you do speak to someone from our program, the staff person will ask you some questions about your situation as well as some general demographic questions. Plan to spend 20-30 minutes on the phone for that first call, although some calls take more time and some take less. We understand that you may have limited time. If that’s the case, you can give us basic information and then set up a phone or in-person appointment.
You do not have to give us your name or any identifying information when you call. It is okay to call anonymously if you would just like to speak with someone about your situation and get some support.
At the end of that first call, the staff person will plan next steps with you.
After the call is over, if you called from your cell phone and you think or know that your partner monitors your phone, remember to erase the number from your call history.
Sometimes this first call can be very difficult to make. Please know that we are here to listen and support you, whether you have something specific that you need or just want to talk. We hope you will make that call.
