Upcoming Master Class

Treatment of Complex Childhood Trauma: A Flexible Approach for Supporting Resilience in Children and Families

Master Class Overview:
There is an increased awareness of the number of infants, young children, and their families who have experienced multiple and/or prolonged traumatic stress. No one protocol, approach, or intervention can meet all of the needs. In this Master Class, Dr. Blaustein will present the theoretical approach, the core domains, and the building blocks of ARC (Attachment, Self-Regulation, and Competency), a flexible, guiding structure to inform our approach to engaging with young children and families. Clinical material will be integrated throughout to give participants a greater understanding of the specific tools and information that is used in this menu-based approach.

About the Speaker:
Margaret E. Blaustein, PhD, is a practicing clinical psychologist whose career has focused on the understanding and treatment of complex childhood trauma. With an emphasis on the importance of understanding the child, the family, and the provider in context, her study has focused on identification and translation of key principles of intervention across treatment settings, building from the foundational theories of childhood development, attachment, and traumatic stress. Dr. Blaustein is co-developer of the Attachment, Self-Regulation, and Competency (ARC) treatment framework and co-author of the text, Treating Complex Trauma in Children and Adolescents: Fostering Resilience through Attachment, Self-Regulation, and Competence. She has provided extensive training and consultation to providers within the US and abroad. Dr. Blaustein is currently the Director of Training and Education at the Trauma Center at JRI in Brookline, MA, and is actively involved in local, regional, and national collaborative groups dedicated to the empathic, respectful, and effective provision of services to this population.

Recent Master Class

Recent advances in brain research have provided great insight into how the brain continues to grow and develop after birth. While positive, nurturing early experiences help the brain develop well, experiences of neglect and abuse can cause some children to develop serious emotional and behavioral challenges. Integrating her interests in neuroscience and relational/cultural theory, Dr. Amy Banks will lead us in a training to gain greater understanding of trauma’s impact on the brain of the developing child and on his/her relationships with primary caregivers and others.

Date: November 4, 2011, 8:30 - 11:30 a.m.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Banks is the Director of Advanced Training at the Jean Baker Miller Training Institute of the Wellesley Centers for Women at Wellesley College and the co-editor of “A Complete Guide to Mental Health for Women”. She also authored the popular project report through the Stone Center Press entitled, “PTSD, Relationships and Brain Chemistry.” She has lectured locally and nationally on a range of topics including the neurobiology of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and the neurobiology of human connection.
