Infant-Parent Training Institute

The Infant-Parent Training Institute (IPTI) is the leading institution in New England offering integrated clinical and theoretical training in infant mental health.

IPTI: Infant-Parent Training InstituteOur courses offer a range of training opportunities to explore the interface of theory and clinical practice, develop new skills, and build a collegial network through the exploration of the earliest relationships of infants, parents, and caregivers. Central to all of our offerings are the opportunities for observation and reflection and the understanding of development as embedded in relationships, community, and culture.

We provide training to professionals from multiple disciplines including social work, psychology, counseling, psychiatry, pediatrics, early education/child care, nursing, and allied health fields. Training with IPTI will allow you to integrate the core concepts of early relational development and intervention into your work whether in direct care, supervision/consultation, or teaching and policy.

Our training program is part of the Center for Early Relationship Support® (CERS), the home for a range of direct service programs for new parents and young children. The connection between IPTI and CERS mirrors our commitment to linking state-of-the-art knowledge with high quality service delivery. Common to all our programs and trainings is the belief that nurturing, reflective relationships promote optimal learning and growth.

Our Programs Include


Infant Mental Health Fellowship

The Infant Mental Health Certificate program includes coursework in infant-parent development; assessment, intervention, and consultation; and clinical practice in infant-parent psychotherapy.

Infant Observation Course

Observing infants over time in their family setting forms the foundation for understanding early development and the parent-child relationship. In addition, the experience of close observation builds awareness of the observer’s internal experiences and responses, a critical base for therapeutic work. Formal training in infant observation has long played a role in the training of psychotherapy professionals and child development specialists. Observers become sensitized to intricate aspects of infant behavior and parent-infant interaction. The seminar is a small (maximum of five students) and supportive learning environment.

Maternal Mental Health Course

Perinatal Emotional Complications

This two-session course for birth professionals including doulas, midwives, physicians assistants, birth instructors, and lactation consultants will provide a broad overview of emotional challenges during the perinatal period, as well as strategies about how to identify and discuss these issues. Participants will also have the opportunity to practice screening tools and to identify appropriate, effective treatments to support mothers and their families.

Master Classes

The Infant-Parent Training Institute is a Training Affiliate of the Cambridge Health Alliance Department of Psychiatry, which is a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.
