Generations of Jews have taught the practice of tzedakah – the obligation to provide for the needs of others. How is the Jewish concept of tzedakah similar to or different from philanthropy or charity, and how should - or shouldn’t - teachings from Jewish tradition inform the work of agencies like JF&CS today? Our discussion will center around these questions as we study a few key classical Talmudic texts and reflect on their relevance today.

Rabbi Perkins has served as the spiritual leader of Temple Aliyah in Needham since 1991. He earned his JD, cum laude, at Harvard Law School, and practiced law for several years in Boston.

Please RSVP to Lorraine Levine at events@jfcsboston.org by February 24, 2012.
